The Real Bride: Invitation Danger!

So, I go down to the Post Office yesterday afternoon to mail my invitations, big box in hand, and as I stand in line, I see a young woman also with a box, talking to one of the Postal workers. I glance over to see that she has a stack of ivory envelopes with addresses in beautiful calligraphy on the front. Also on the front is bright red stamps and writing that says “Postage Due”. Apparently, she did not weigh her invites prior to putting stamps on them and mailing them out, so they all came back to her. So now she has to restamp all of them as is, or re- envelope and stamp all of them. Wow, how sucky is that?

Everything I read on sending out invitations say to take them to the post office and have them weighed–heck, I had the Clerk weigh 2 different ones, just to make sure I hade the right postage on them. All of mine were 58 cents–but of course, the 58 cent stamps are not available until June because of the postal increase last week, so all of my invites got a 41 and a 17 cent stamp–so no “love” stamps for me–which is not that big of a deal to me, as I wasn’t super impressed with the artwork on the 2 oz “Love Stamp” .

And because we went with an RSVP service instead of a mailing card, I saved over $30.00 in postage not having to self address stamp response cards.

Sending out your invites are a BIG deal–and you probably paid a fortune for them–so take the time to make sure everything is in the envelope (invitation, response card/ envelope/directions to events/hotel info (if applicable) and anything else your guests will need for your wedding day) and make sure that the front inner envelope (where the 1st names of your guests are is facing the back of the out envelope, so that when your guest open the back, their name is the 1st thing they see. Then, make sure you take them to the post office and have a couple of them weighed, just to make sure you have the right amount of postage on them. And then when you are done stamping them–take them back to the counter and hand them to the clerk, rather than dumping them in the mail slot–you never know what someone could have put in there that could wreck your invites.

So, now I just hope they all get to where they need to go, and in as great condition as they left my hands.

Any other invite tips you would like to share? I would love to hear them!
